Chicana poet Gloria E. Anzaldúa once wrote that “Nothing happens in the real world unless it first happens in the images in our heads”. If this is true, then – for artists – changing the image in our heads must begin through an artistic exploration of one’s own identity. But what happens when who you were doesn’t comport neatly with who you are – or who you want to be?

Camden FireWorks presents Duality: Reflection, Representation & Other Matters of Self. A group exhibition of three artists and how they use art to facilitate growth in understanding, accepting, and owning of their multi-faceted identity.

Chef. Artist. Builder. Broken. Whole.

All are relevant descriptors when exploring the myriad ways in which the arts can help use pull together those seemingly disparate parts of the self.

Duality will exhibit at Camden FireWorks, 1813 S Broadway, Camden, NJ 08104 from April 2 to May 19, 2023.
